My Review:
I am reviewing this about a week after I finished it. Horrorstor was enjoyable. It succeeded what it set out to do, which is to be a paranormal horror and it just didn’t WOW me. It’s slow to start until over a third in. I will give Hendrix some props as this is his first published work.
There are several interesting things about it. If you listen this to audiobook, it is really interesting in the beginning. The book’s introduction is Orsk’s catalogue, which is different and a parody of an IKEA catalogue. An item was the chapter title with a picture of said item, they kept getting more creepy as the book goes on.
The characters were a little flat. I get that we only get a short period of time with the characters, a nine-hour shift. We don’t get the best narrator either in the beginning, however they mature over the course of the book and showed character growth through her actions.
The paranormal element was nice and I feel Hendrix did a magnificent job with the ghosts and history about them. Once the paranormal was vaguely mentioned, I was like, “Ok, that’s pretty obvious.” What else would haunt this furniture store? It had no shock factor for me.
There are a lot of loose ends left at the end that leave it completely open for a sequel. I do not know if that is planned or Hendrix just wanted to leave it open ended. I personally do not like loose ends in a standalone, I feel just about everything should be tied up in a nice, pretty bow in the end.
So the book was good. It just didn’t wow me. I would recommend this to people just getting into the horror genre and people who likes paranormal horror especially.
That’s all for now, ’til next time.
Happy Reading!
